DUCK…DUCK…GONE!
Finally, a moment to show you the night of goodbyes. My duck friend, Randy, is the good soul who couldn’t see the girls go anyplace but to his backyard.
This is the end of a crazy chase around the yard. I’m glad no one was watching the capture, it would have been prime YOUTUBE video!
NOTE, I had lots of hubby help. This can’t be done alone!
All packed in and ready to go!
Nice for the ducks that my travel time to the new digs was about 5 minutes! Not much time too get very scared. They came right out of the crate and into their new yard.
It was amazing how quickly they became a part of the flock.
This was the last moment I could recognize my ducks!
They quickly became part of a larger flock of mostly Appleyard ducks. They are huge and beautiful.
You ask about my yard? It’s a little quiet, but we’ll be moving soon so I’ve got plenty to keep me busy. And what becomes of my duck blog? It will probably become a quilt blog since my passion has diverted. Randy did tell me a few days after dropping the ducks off that they had all layed eggs, which tells me they weren’t too traumatized. I’m sure I’ll check on them, so I’ll post ongoing duck pics now and then. For now I’ll just say, THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER!
The Day of “Last”
I’ve found a fantastic home for the Hoover girls! My duck friend, Randy, who lives about a mile from me, decided he couldn’t see the girls go far, so he’s taking them tonight. This morning as I picked up my last eggs ;-( I thought I’d share with you my “last’s”….
Like my last egg hunt. No more fresh eggs! And no more egg hunting! This was the flower bed that I once tried to fence and keep them OUT. You can see how well that has worked!
The last poopy water that I’ll ever change. This one I may not miss too much! But the fun of that is watching how much fun a duck can have in clean water.
The last bug hunt.
That last duck stare that says, “What the heck are you doing in my yard?”

And the very last ducky swim. The good news is that Randy has a huge passion for ducks and lives with 8 Khaki and Appleyard females. He has the same kinda yard that I have, so I know the girls will be really happy there. And did I mention that he also raises a few ducklings (hint, hint! no really, not for awhile!) I can visit them anytime and probably scoop up a few eggs now and then.
Check back later this week because I’m sure there will be great entertainment in tonight’s duck gathering. And I’ll try to get a few shots of these Appleyard ducks that Randy is so proud of.
Everyone keeps asking about my blog and if it will end. I fear not as I think there are plenty of things to blog about out there. For now, we’re gonna go spend some time with our kids in Texas and be free. How much fun is that!!??
:-( The Girls Need a New Home!
Sad, but so, we are moving to a new house and the girls need to find a new home. As much as I would like to take them, they wouldn’t like the new yard! Let’s say, they would have to live most of their life in a pen and I wouldn’t like that. I’m selling them for $30 for the group (they must go together!).
A few tidbits…..they have roamed my fenced backyard for over a year, so they are used to being free. I never put them in a pen, but they do go into one for food and shelter. They are SO easy to take care of. I fill their grain every few days (cost runs about $10 a month or less) and change water every day in the summer. They have a small wading pool and a few scattered tubs around the yard.
The girls tolerate a small dog, numerous squirrels, a few varments that stray in and out, and seem to hold their own against them all! They are quiet and only make noise if they can’t find each other or something is chasing them in the yard. They are constant layers and I gather 3 eggs a day, except during the extreme cold or if they are molting. They spend the entire day chasing bugs, sleeping, chasing bugs…..you get the idea. Petting or touching them is not an option, therefore, I don’t know that I would call them a pet. But they are loads of cheap entertainment and supply a nice amount of eggs. I often sell a dozen for $3, so they can be money makers! Let me know if you are interested, comment and it comes straight to my email. Maybe 3 ducks can be your next adventure!
BTW, I live in eastern Kansas, pick up only
Garden 2010….SLOW!!
SLOW is the one word that comes to mind when I describe my garden this year. I even had most of it planted by the end of April. I’m chalkin’ it up to our wonky weather this year, too much rain!!
Everything is small too, therefore, I feed it to the ducks. At least they are dining well!
Lots of blossoms, but barely any squash.
I’ve got a teeny tiny watermelon that doesn’t seem to want to grow up. He’s been this way for a few days!
Green tomatoes that don’t want to get red. Even my Big Boy’s are not very big.
But my salvation is the cucumbers. I’m starting to see cucs with those blossoms. There is hope!
But the most fun for me while I garden is watching the waiting girls. They sit, they watch, they wait, for any fresh morsel I will throw over the fence.
How does your garden grow this summer?
